Introducing money into what amounts to scraping websites is legally iffy, not sure this is a good solution. It should be clear these are only donations, there's no quid pro quo. If anyone wants to take over the project and ask for donations project-wide it's also OK by me, as long as no license changes happen. It's even already SaaS compatible, if anyone wants to host this and sell access. Good luck with evading the IP blocks... I only maintain some smaller bridges, so it's not big deal for me. The best solution is company, which run their websites, pays to its employee to make fulltext RSS feeds. Just image those companies would be Facebook or Reuters (news about their RSS shutting down https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23576022).
I agree with this and I hope other current and future bridge maintainers will also agree.
To change license, you have to ask every contributor, if he/she agrees. If in this repository someone simply replaces UNLICENSE to (A/L)GPLv3, MIT or some proprietary license, that is illegal and you must report to github support or do something to revert it. This could be legal, if every committer signed some CLA (some good explanation https://drewdevault.com/2018/10/05/Dont-sign-a-CLA.html), which is not our case. |

Of course, but usually the bridges appear after the companies remove the feeds. Twitter used to have RSS exposed on the (unauthenticated) API, but then they shut it down. So scraping is the only solution, since usually the sites themselves remain open.
Ah, that's right. Each contributor owns their contributions, so licence changes require unanimity (or removing their code, I guess). That is fine. I'm in favour of this donation change, we'll see if this changes the churn rate of big bridge maintainers. |

This donation idea does seem neat! Honestly, as someone who contributed, and wanted to be a bridge maintainer, the biggest frustration to me was not having automated tests that the bridges still work. It was frustrating juggling a tonne of issues, some of which are just people using it wrong, and some are it being actually broken. It would have been nice to have a nightly automated test saying "yup, it's broken". It wouldn't need to block merges or anything, just run nightly. We could have a display of which bridges are known to work then, too! I tried adding an example ages back: #1823 but that PR has really decayed since then and I've been busy with a lot of other stuff, (and I've not even had time to set up my own rss-bridge instance and start using it!) The masses of PRs building up, and open issues is quite frustrating for adding much also, so I hope the donations will allow you more ability to churn through all of those! Also, it does seem that Facebook and Instagram (especially Instagram) are actively working to prevent feeds and this sort of thing now? Which.. I'm not certain whether a couple dollars overcomes the dev teams of a multibillion dollar company being assholes. |

Facebook was always rate-limited and generally scraper-busting, but Instagram was only limited recently. Ironic, considering Facemash was created by scraping. Even bringing out the big guns like Bibliogram and following about 10 profiles will blacklist your IP forever. The recommended way to thwart it is using Tor, which seems completely excessive to read public information. Some of the profiles are even glorified ads, for crying out loud! |

BTW, this is a big problem with automating the test suite. It needs fresh IPs for the big providers, or just skipping them and waiting for issues about how it's broken. |

Ahh, I was thinking automated tests running once a day wouldn't be enough to trigger that. In my previous attempts I didn't notice that happening? |

Maybe if it's an IP not used for anything else, but the ones on the cloud are even more rate limited. It might possible, but it might fail for some reason at any time, which is kinda shitty for a CI system. |

Oh yeah, this kind of external integration test is often very flakey, especially when the thing you're integrating with actively doesn't want you to. |

Does it mean there is a way to make it work (at least for pages and groups)? My bridge is behind a Auth mechanism so I'm already not a public instance. |

I see. I made a quick dirty patch in April 2021, where I deployed on public instance. You can try the same way, but it may cost facebook account you use for that instance to work. |

Bridge maintainers give up maintaining their bridges (Instagram and Facebook are main examples). To have more motivation for maintaining them it would be nice, if their work is being payed somehow.
