I found this excellent tutorial by Microsoft and started learning essential topics like regression, classification, clustering, etc.

Then you can move on with this ML tutorial by AWS and Udacity.

I'd also suggest doing sample projects like image classification. Here's a tutorial from TensorFlow to classify images of flowers.

Your Statistical, Mathematical, and Programming skills play a core role in progressing further.
