error classes not found which are part of other projects as compileOnly

I have a multimodule gradle project.
B depends on A as a compileOnly dependency
when I do this I get that classes are not found on my editor. Gradle builds fine so thats not a problem
when I make A an implementation dependency it works.

Should this be reported as a bug or is there some config I'm missing
