There’s probably no easy way to do this as of now. Or is there?
How do people do this?

I do have an idea about how to implement this, but it's not trivial, and isn't possible at the moment.

Currently mafia hoogle is using the hoogle indexes from hackage. Mafia hoogle should really export documentation for each packages which would work in general, for both external and private dependencies. We've been planning on doing this for a while, it shouldn't be too hard, but just haven't found the time.
