It appears whatever you did to insert a line in /etc/auto.master over-wrote it instead of append to it...make sure you use the double >>

sudo echo "/mnt /etc/auto.ext-usb --timeout=10,defaults,user,exec,uid=1000" >> /etc/auto.master

Totally my fault. When reading the script I thought the intent was to overwrite.

Also, the script, as it was, didn't work for me. It did not successfully append anything, so I wrote it to a file in $HOME and then moved that file over the existing one, which is where the mistake was obviously made on my part.
