Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

I am trying to use nix-vm-test to test a process of installing and configuring nix on developer machines.
However I've encountered issues both when running the default nix installer and the DeterminateSystems one.

in the case of the default installer I see it trying to chown the existing nix store, which takes forever and fails it's mostly populated by content of the nix store from the host machine (which understandably is mounted read only)

in the case of DeterminateSystems I get the following error:

Is there a way to configure the vm in a way which would make it possible to install nix via one of the above methods?

Describe the solution you'd like

Document either how to achieve the above, or why it's not possible.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Do nothing, leading to other people stumbling over the same problem in the future.
